Finding the noble gases on an outline Periodic Table
The outline Periodic Table shows the positions of seven elements, A to G. The letters are not their chemical symbols.
(a) Which two letters represent noble gases?
(b) Which noble gas has only two electrons in its outer shell?
(c) Which two letters represent elements that exist as diatomic molecules?
(d) Which two letters represent elements that form ions with the same electronic configuration as element E?
- 1
(a) The noble gases are in the last column, Group VIII: E and F.
- 2
(b) F is in Period 1, so it has only one shell, which is full with 2 electrons — it is helium. Answer: F.
- 3
(c) G is in Group VI, Period 2 (oxygen, ) and D is in Group VII, Period 3 (chlorine, ): D and G. The noble gases are monatomic, not diatomic.
- 4
(d) E is neon, 2,8. A (sodium, 2,8,1) loses one electron to form , 2,8; G (oxygen, 2,6) gains two electrons to form , 2,8. Answer: A and G. (D forms , which is 2,8,8 — like argon, not neon.)
Answer
(a) E and F (b) F (c) D and G (d) A and G
Examiner tip
Give exactly the number of letters asked for. The June 2025 examiner report warned: "If a single answer is asked for, two (or more) answers should not be given, as incorrect statements may" cancel correct ones. In (b), remember that helium is the exception: a full outer shell for helium is 2 electrons, not 8.
