Describing how five changes affect the rate
Marble chips (calcium carbonate) react with dilute hydrochloric acid.
(a) For each change, state whether the rate of reaction increases, decreases or stays the same.
| change | |
|---|---|
(i) | the marble chips are replaced by the same mass of larger chips | |
(ii) | the acid is heated from to | |
(iii) | the acid is diluted with water |
(b) Sulfur dioxide and oxygen react as gases. State the effect on the rate of increasing the pressure.
(c) State two things that are true of a catalyst.
(d) What name is given to biological catalysts?
- 1
(a)(i) Larger chips of the same mass have a smaller surface area, so fewer acid particles can reach the solid: the rate decreases.
- 2
(ii) A higher temperature always increases the rate. (iii) Diluting the acid lowers its concentration, so the rate decreases.
- 3
(b) For gases, a higher pressure squeezes the same particles into a smaller volume, so the rate increases.
- 4
(c) A catalyst increases the rate of a reaction and is unchanged (chemically, and in mass) at the end of the reaction. (d) Biological catalysts are enzymes.
Answer
(a)(i) decreases (ii) increases (iii) decreases (b) increases (c) it increases the rate; it is unchanged at the end of the reaction (d) enzymes
Examiner tip
In (c), "a catalyst speeds up a reaction" earns only one mark — the second mark needs the idea that it is unchanged at the end. Avoid saying a catalyst "is not used": it does take part in the reaction but is regenerated.
