Naming apparatus and reading a gas syringe
Marble chips react with dilute hydrochloric acid in the apparatus shown. The carbon dioxide produced is collected.
(a) Name the pieces of apparatus labelled A and B.
(b) State what B is used for in this experiment.
(c) Use the enlarged view to read the volume of gas collected.
(d) Name the piece of apparatus used to time the reaction.
- 1
(a) A is a conical flask; B is a gas syringe.
- 2
(b) The gas syringe collects the carbon dioxide and measures its volume: the plunger is pushed out as gas enters.
- 3
(c) Each small division in the enlarged view is cm³. The front face of the plunger is one division past , so the volume is cm³.
- 4
(d) A stop-watch.
Answer
(a) A conical flask; B gas syringe (b) To collect and measure the volume of carbon dioxide (c) cm³ (d) Stop-watch
Examiner tip
The June 2025 examiner report noted that weaker candidates "incorrectly identified the gas syringe as a ruler or a measuring tube or measuring cylinder." The March 2025 report added that "Candidates should be encouraged to explain what the apparatus is used for, rather than just list the items." Name it and say what it measures.
