Which compounds are hydrocarbons?
Natural gas is mainly methane. Petroleum is a mixture of hydrocarbons.
(a) State what is meant by a hydrocarbon. [1]
(b) Which of these compounds are hydrocarbons? [2]
· · · · ·
(c) Explain what is meant by saying petroleum is a mixture, and why this allows it to be separated by fractional distillation. [2]
- 1
(a) A hydrocarbon is a compound that contains hydrogen and carbon only.
- 2
(b) Check each formula for any element other than C and H. contains O, contains Cl and contains O and no H. The hydrocarbons are , and .
- 3
(c) A mixture contains different substances that are not chemically combined. The hydrocarbons in petroleum have different boiling points, so they can be separated by boiling and condensing them at different temperatures.
Answer
(a) A compound containing hydrogen and carbon only (b) , , (c) Different compounds, not chemically combined, with different boiling points
Examiner tip
The word only is the mark in (a). 'Contains hydrogen and carbon' also describes ethanol and carbon-containing compounds with other elements. A common error in (b) is to include ethanol because it burns as a fuel.
