Properties behind the uses of aluminium and copper
Give the property, or properties, of the metal that make it suitable for each use.
(a) Aluminium used to make the bodies of aircraft.
(b) Aluminium used for overhead electrical cables. (two properties)
(c) Aluminium used for food containers.
(d) Copper used for electrical wiring in houses. (two properties)
- 1
(a) Aircraft must be as light as possible: aluminium has a low density.
- 2
(b) Overhead cables hang between pylons, so they must be light and carry current: low density and good electrical conductivity.
- 3
(c) Food containers must not react with food or moisture: aluminium is resistant to corrosion.
- 4
(d) Copper is a very good electrical conductor and is ductile — it can be drawn out into thin wires.
Answer
(a) Low density (b) Low density and good electrical conductivity (c) Resistant to corrosion (d) Good electrical conductivity and ductile.
Examiner tip
A common error is to write "light" or "strong" or "conducts" without saying what. Use the syllabus words: low density, good electrical conductivity, ductile, resistant to corrosion. "Conducts heat" would not score for a wiring question.
