Sulfur dioxide, acid rain and how to cut emissions
Here is a list of gases.
carbon dioxide · carbon monoxide · methane · nitrogen · nitrogen dioxide · sulfur dioxide
(a) Name the gas in the list that is formed when fossil fuels containing sulfur compounds are burned. [1]
(b) Name one other gas in the list that causes acid rain. [1]
(c) State two ways of reducing the emission of the gas in (a) from power stations and vehicles. [2]
(d) Describe the test for the gas in (a) and give the result. [1]

(a) Fossil fuels such as coal contain sulfur compounds. When they burn, the sulfur is oxidised to sulfur dioxide, . Sulfur dioxide dissolves in rainwater and makes it acidic — acid rain.
- 2
(b) The other acid-rain gas in the list is nitrogen dioxide (an oxide of nitrogen, formed in car engines). Nitrogen itself is unreactive and is not a pollutant — it makes up about 78% of clean air.
- 3
(c) The syllabus strategies for reducing sulfur dioxide are: use low-sulfur fuels (remove sulfur compounds from the fuel before it is burned), and flue gas desulfurisation — passing the waste gases from power stations through calcium oxide, a base that reacts with the acidic sulfur dioxide.
- 4
(d) Bubble the gas into acidified aqueous potassium manganate(VII). Sulfur dioxide turns it from purple to colourless.
Answer
(a) Sulfur dioxide (b) Nitrogen dioxide (c) Any two: use low-sulfur fuels; flue gas desulfurisation using calcium oxide (for power stations). (d) Acidified aqueous potassium manganate(VII) turns from purple to colourless.
Examiner tip
Write the full name of the gas. On an acid-rain item the June 2025 examiner report noted that "Nitrogen was seen occasionally, possibly due to confusion with" oxides of nitrogen — nitrogen gas is not a pollutant. In (d), give both colours: 'turns colourless' alone does not say what the starting colour was.
