Recognising alkanes and counting their bonds
(a) Alkanes are described as saturated hydrocarbons. State what is meant by:
(i) hydrocarbon
(ii) saturated. [2]
(b) Which of these formulae are alkanes?
· · · · [1]
(c) How many covalent bonds hold a pentane molecule, , together? [1]
- 1
(a)(i) A hydrocarbon is a compound containing hydrogen and carbon only. (ii) Saturated means all carbon–carbon bonds are single bonds. The bonding in alkanes is single covalent.
- 2
(b) An alkane fits and contains only C and H. : ✓. : needs 12 H ✗ (an alkene). ✓. contains O ✗. ✓.
- 3
(c) Pentane is an unbranched chain of 5 carbons. Carbon–carbon bonds: one fewer than the number of carbons, . Every H is joined by one C–H bond: 12.
Answer
(a)(i) Contains hydrogen and carbon only (ii) All carbon–carbon bonds are single (b) , and (c) 16
Examiner tip
The June 2025 examiner reports noted that, when asked to pick out an alkane or an unsaturated hydrocarbon from a list, many candidates confused alkanes with alkenes. Check the general formula every time: is an alkane, an alkene.
