Defining a covalent bond and counting the bonds in a molecule
The displayed formula of propan-1-ol is shown.
(a) Give the meaning of the term covalent bond.
(b) How many covalent bonds are there in one molecule of propan-1-ol?
(c) State the number of atoms in a molecule described as diatomic, and name one diatomic element.
- 1
(a) Two marking points: a covalent bond is a pair of electrons (M1) shared between two atoms (M2). The sharing gives each atom a noble gas electronic configuration.
- 2
(b) Each line in a displayed formula is one covalent bond. Count them by type.
- 3
(c) Di- means two: a diatomic molecule contains two atoms, e.g. hydrogen , oxygen , nitrogen or chlorine .
Answer
(a) A pair of electrons shared between two atoms (b) (c) Two atoms; e.g. nitrogen (or hydrogen, oxygen, chlorine)
Examiner tip
In a definition question the June 2025 examiner report stated that a "covalent bond is the sharing of two electrons between two atoms." Avoid two or more pairs or between two or more atoms — each covalent bond is one pair between two atoms. When counting, it helps to tick each line as you go: the C–H bonds are the easiest to miss.
