Labelling an atom and its particles
The diagram shows an atom of an element.
(a) Name particles X, Y and Z, and name region W.
(b) Which two types of particle are found in region W?
(c) Use the diagram to state
(i) the proton number
(ii) the nucleon number of this atom. Identify the element.
(d) Copy and complete the table.
| particle | relative charge | relative mass |
|---|---|---|
| proton | ||
| neutron | ||
| electron |
- 1
(a) X is an electron (in a shell). Y is a proton (positive, in the nucleus). Z is a neutron (no charge, in the nucleus). W is the nucleus.
- 2
(b) The nucleus contains protons and neutrons — both are needed.
- 3
(c)(i) Proton number = number of protons = 4. (ii) Nucleon number = protons + neutrons 9. Proton number 4 is beryllium, Be. (Check: 4 electrons, arranged 2,2.)
- 4
(d) proton: charge , mass ; neutron: charge , mass ; electron: charge , mass (negligible).
Answer
(a) X electron; Y proton; Z neutron; W nucleus (b) protons and neutrons (c)(i) 4 (ii) 9; beryllium (d) proton , 1; neutron , 1; electron ,
Examiner tip
The June 2025 examiner report noted that "Both protons and neutrons were required but a common error was to give only one of the particles." For the table, the same session's report found "The most common errors were omission of the plus sign for the" proton charge — write , not just — and giving the neutron a relative mass of zero.
