Pitch and loudness from oscilloscope traces
Four sounds are displayed on an oscilloscope. The time-base and the vertical sensitivity are the same for all four traces.
(a) State which sound has the highest pitch.
(b) State which sound is the loudest.
(c) State which sound has the same pitch as A but is louder.
- 1
Because the time-base is the same, more complete waves across the screen means a higher frequency. Count the waves: A , B , C , D .
- 2
(a) Pitch depends on frequency, so the highest pitch is B.
- 3
(b) Loudness depends on amplitude — the height of a peak above the centre line. C has the largest amplitude ( divisions), so C is the loudest.
- 4
(c) C has the same number of waves as A (same frequency, so same pitch) but a larger amplitude: C.
Answer
(a) B (b) C (c) C
Examiner tip
Pitch goes with frequency and loudness goes with amplitude. A common error is to measure amplitude from a trough to a peak, or to think that waves drawn "more tightly" are louder. The comparison is only valid because the oscilloscope settings are the same for every trace.
