Defining and calculating momentum
(a) Define momentum.
(b) A bowling ball of mass rolls along a lane at . Calculate its momentum.
(c) State whether momentum is a scalar or a vector quantity.
- 1
(a) Momentum is mass × velocity.
- 2
(b) Substitute, and give the unit kg m/s.
- 3
(c) Velocity has a direction, so momentum has a direction too: momentum is a vector. The ball's momentum is along the lane.
Answer
(a) Mass × velocity (b) (c) Vector
Examiner tip
The June 2025 examiner report noted that "Some responses gave the definition of impulse which is a change in momentum and some stated speed instead of velocity." Use the word velocity. The unit kg m/s (equivalently N s) must be included.
