Stating the density equation and finding a volume
A solid marble plinth for a statue has a mass of . The density of marble is .
(a) State the equation that defines density.
(b) Calculate the volume of the plinth. Give your answer to 2 significant figures.
- 1
(a) Density is mass per unit volume. Write it as an equation, in symbols or in words.
- 2
(b) Rearrange to make volume the subject before substituting.
- 3
Substitute the mass in kg and the density in kg/m³, so the volume comes out in m³.
- 4
Round to 2 significant figures. The first two significant figures are the and the ; the next digit is , so the stays.
Answer
(a) (density = mass ÷ volume) (b)
Examiner tip
When asked for an equation, write the equation. The March 2026 examiner report noted that "A few candidates described density instead of stating the equation asked for in the question." The same report also noted that "Some candidates gave their answer to only one significant figure." Leading zeros are not significant: has two significant figures, while has only one.
