Two sets with a 'neither' region
In a group of students, play football, play tennis and play both.
(a) Find the number who play football only.
(b) Find the number who play neither sport.
- 1
Always fill the overlap first. Put in the centre region, where the two circles meet.
- 2
(a) The footballers include those , so subtract to get football only.
- 3
Do the same for tennis.
- 4
Add the three regions inside the circles to get the union.
- 5
(b) Everyone else is outside both circles. Subtract from the group total.
Answer
(a) students (b) students
Examiner tip
The figure is football altogether, not football only — a common error is to skip subtracting the overlap, which then makes the total exceed . It is a coincidence that the answer to (b) is also ; check it rather than assuming a pattern.
