Pay from a clock card
Luca's clock card for one week is shown. His lunch break of minutes each day is unpaid. He is paid $13.80 per hour.
(a) Show that Luca is paid for hours this week.
(b) Calculate Luca's pay for the week.
(c) Luca wants to earn at least $600 this week. He can work extra hours on Saturday at the same hourly rate. Find the least number of whole hours he must work on Saturday.
- 1
(a) Find the time between clocking in and clocking out for each day, then take off the -minute lunch break. Monday: to is h min.
- 2
Do the same for the other days. Tuesday is h min, Wednesday h min, Thursday h min and Friday h min before the break is removed.
- 3
Add the paid hours for all five days.
- 4
(b) Multiply the hours by the hourly rate. The pay is $496.80.
- 5
(c) Find how much more he needs to reach $600.
- 6
Divide by the hourly rate. The answer is not a whole number, and hours would leave him short, so round up.
Answer
(a) hours (b) $496.80 (c) hours
Examiner tip
Time is not decimal: h min is h, not h, and a common error is to subtract clock times as if they were ordinary decimals. In (c) the context decides the rounding — hours earns only $96.60 extra, so rounding to the nearest whole number loses the final mark.
