(a) Multiplying powers of the same base adds the indices.
- 2
(b) Dividing subtracts the indices.
- 3
(c) A power of a power multiplies the indices.
- 4

Examiner tip
Three different operations on the indices — add, subtract, multiply — and they apply only when the base is the same. The June 2025 examiner report noted that, when multiplying terms like those in (d), dealing with the terms sometimes resulted in an error: remember that means , so , not .
