Sketching a cubic from its roots
For :
(a) Find where the curve crosses the -axis. (b) Describe the shape of the curve for large positive and large negative .
- 1
(a) Set and factorise, taking out the common factor first.
- 2
Set each factor to zero.
- 3
(b) The coefficient is positive, so the curve falls from bottom-left and rises to top-right.
- 4
Check a value to confirm: at , , which is positive as expected.
Answer
(a) , and (b) from bottom-left to top-right (positive coefficient)
Examiner tip
Crossing the -axis means , so set the equation equal to first. On a similar cubic the June 2025 examiner report noted that "Many did not realise they needed to start by equating the equation of the curve to 0." Then take out the common factor of before trying anything else — that immediately gives one root and reduces the rest to a difference of two squares. A cubic with three distinct roots has two turning points between them.
