The 7 regions
Memorise the order: Radio, Microwave, Infrared, Visible, UV, X-ray, Gamma.
The electromagnetic spectrum is the full range of EM waves, ordered by frequency (or equivalently by wavelength — they are inversely related by v = fλ with v = c).
A handy mnemonic: Radio Microwave Infra-red Visible Ultra-violet X-ray Gamma — "Rascally Muppets Invade Very Ugly Xylophone Galleries".
- All EM waves: same speed in vacuum (3.0 × 10⁸ m/s), all transverse.
- Order of frequency (low → high): R-M-I-V-U-X-G.
- Higher frequency = more energy per photon = potentially more harmful.
