What is a force?
A force is just a push or a pull — but it's responsible for almost everything that moves, stops or changes shape around you.
Pause for a second and look around. The chair pushes up on you. Gravity pulls everything downwards. A breeze nudges a curtain. Every one of these is a force — a push or a pull from one thing on another.
You cannot actually see a force. What you see is the effect of the force: something starts to move, stops, changes direction, or changes shape.
Force is measured in newtons (N), named after Sir Isaac Newton. We use a small spring scale called a newton meter (or force meter) to measure it. One newton is roughly the weight of a small apple held in your hand.
- A force is a push or a pull.
- You cannot see a force — only its effects (movement, shape change).
- Force is measured in newtons (N) using a newton meter.
- One newton ≈ the weight of a small apple.
