The conversion-factor method. To convert from one unit to another, multiply by a fraction that equals 1 (same physical quantity on top and bottom).
Worked example. Convert 5.2km to metres.
5.2kmΓ1km1000mβ=5200m.
The fraction 1km1000mβ equals 1 because they're the same quantity. The km cancels, leaving m.
Worked example. Convert 250cm2 to m2.
Watch out: square units don't convert linearly. 1m=100cm so 1m2=(100)2=10000cm2.
250cm2Γ10000cm21m2β=0.025m2.
For CUBIC units, the factor is cubed: 1m3=106cm3.
Time conversions (non-SI but essential):
- 60s=1min.
- 3600s=1h.
- 86400s=1day.
Worked example. Convert 72km/h to m/s.
72hkmβΓ1km1000mβΓ3600s1hβ=360072000β=20m/s.
A quick rule: divide km/h by 3.6 to get m/s.
