Starter: how would you measure it?
Teacher
Write the four questions on the board. Give students a minute per question to write an answer in their exercise books, then take two or three answers aloud with reasons. Do not correct question 3 yet — take a show of hands for "time one swing" against "time many swings" and come back to it in the next stage. For question 4, ask for a hand signal: one finger for speed, two for velocity.
Students
Write a short answer to each question in your exercise book, then hold it up or tell a partner when asked (mini whiteboards work too, if your class has them).
What to do
Answer the four questions in writing before you check. For question 3, write down which method you think is better and why — you will find out in the next stage.
- 1.
How could you find the volume of a small stone with an irregular shape?
Put water in a measuring cylinder and read the level. Lower the stone in fully and read the new level. The rise in level is the volume of the stone.
- 2.
A digital stopwatch shows (minutes : seconds). Write the time in seconds.
. Do not forget the minute.
- 3.
To find the time for one swing of a pendulum, is it better to time one swing or swings? Why?
swings, then divide by . Your reaction time when starting and stopping the stopwatch is spread over swings, so the error in one swing is much smaller.
- 4.
Which of speed and velocity includes a direction?
Velocity. Speed is a scalar (size only); velocity is a vector (size and direction).
