How Many IGCSE Exam Sittings Can You Take? Cambridge & Edexcel Rules
How Many IGCSE Exam Sittings Can You Take?
You can take IGCSE exams across multiple sittings (exam sessions). There is no fixed limit on how many sittings you use; what matters is that you meet the board’s rules for combining results when you cash in for a certificate.
What Counts as One “Sitting”?
A sitting is one exam session (e.g. May/June 2026 or October/November 2026). In that sitting you might take one subject or several.
Spreading Subjects Across Sittings
- Cambridge: You can take some subjects in May/June and others in October/November (or in different years). When you cash in, you choose which results to include on the certificate.
- Edexcel: Same idea—different subjects (or retakes) can be in January, May/June, or October/November. The certificate can combine grades from different sessions within the board’s rules.
Practical Planning
- Many students take most subjects in one main sitting (e.g. May/June) and use another sitting for retakes or one or two extra subjects.
- Spreading over 2–3 sittings is common for private candidates or those resitting.
- Check with your centre about the latest combination rules for certification so you don’t miss a deadline.
