Edexcel IGCSE Geography 4GE1: Most Common Mistakes from Examiner Reports
Edexcel IGCSE Geography 4GE1: Frequent mistakes
Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Geography shares many common error patterns with Cambridge and other boards. Principal Examiner Feedback emphasises command words, resource use, data interpretation and place-specific detail.
Command words and focus
Describe vs. explain
Confusing describe (what/how) with explain (why). Many write descriptions when reasons are asked.
Fix: Describe = account of features. Explain = reasons; use “because”.
Wrong focus
Not matching the question focus—e.g. causes vs. impacts; problems vs. solutions; local vs. global. Writing about the wrong scale or aspect.
Fix: Underline the focus. Answer that aspect only.
No comparative language
When compare is asked, writing two separate descriptions instead of integrated comparison.
Fix: “Both…”, “Whereas…”, “Unlike…”, “X is… while Y is…”
Data and resource use
Ignoring the resource
Failing to use data, maps, diagrams or photographs provided. Answers from memory alone score poorly.
Fix: Reference specific details. “The map shows…”, “According to the data…”, “Figure 2 indicates…”
Superficial interpretation
Surface-level analysis. Not identifying trends, patterns or implications.
Fix: Describe trend. Explain meaning. Link to geographical concepts.
Content and development
Vague general statements
Writing vague statements instead of precise answers with place-specific detail.
Fix: Name places. Use data. Give specific examples.
Lifting without interpretation
Copying from resources without interpretation or analysis. Paraphrase and apply.
Fix: “This suggests…”, “The data shows…”, “This indicates…”
Insufficient development
Not developing or linking ideas in longer responses. Single sentences per point.
Fix: Develop each point. Explain. Link to question context.
Case studies
Wrong scale
Using case studies at wrong scale (e.g. national when local asked).
Fix: Match the scale. If “local”, use local example.
Irrelevant material
Including irrelevant or lengthy background. Focus on what the question asks.
Fix: Select relevant information. Concise. Question-focused.
Equipment and terminology
- Bring ruler and calculator. Required for maps and calculations.
- Use geographical terminology correctly. Define terms properly.
